This suggests that you were genuine in not knowing. But had you never done a quick web search? It's the kind of thing that I'd feel compelled to find whether I could change the behavior to fit what I would prefer.
Anyway, if you're unaware, here are a couple useful shortcuts for kbd-driven navigation: Command-Down (arrow) to dig one level down the file tree and Command-Up (arrow) to move to the enclosing directory / folder. I use it many times a day all day long.
The problem I've been having is that in Word "Recents" is selected by default.
So I pull down that menu and it's useless (full of random Recent folders)
The comment above made me realise if I pick "Documents" in the left hand side, that top menu changes from having a bunch of useless "Recents" in it and exposes the filesystem.
No I've never thought to Google how to use the Finder - it seems like that one thing that should be super intutitve - I've never had to Google how to use any other filesystem manager, Windows or Linux. Or iOS. Or Android.
“Recents” is not Finder. That’s actually Microsoft’s useleas UI. It would be far more usable if they did just open the real system file picker. (Msft messed this up on Windows too.)
Yea so it seems my frustrations come from not understanding the file picker isn't the finder. Anyway I've learnt a few things, so thanks everyone. I feel less powerless now.
But this is like the same as windows explorer right? It opens whatever view you used for the app (say, “recents”) and then you click something in the sidebar to go to the “real” filesystem?
I also didn't know how to do that, and I'm certain that I've looked it up at some point. It's just so unintuitive that I'd need to do it daily to remember

People legitimately need these drugs, including in the short term. The problem for acute stressors once they resolve is how to get them back off.

And don't even get me started on tricyclics or MAOIs... no, seriously, don't get me started on them! The current generation of first-line antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs) might as well be free compared to the old school crazy pills.
Much of medicine (especially mental health related) is rather primitive. We are literally reverse engineering discoveries that seem to work on some other animals, and then figuring out how (to the best of our limited ability).
I liken SSRIs to carpet bombing - also their mechanism to increase seratonin in the brain is by making something else not use it (reuptake inhibition). We’re guessing that other thing isn’t a big deal. But who knows. Serotonin is produced in the gut and it controls melatonin, which controls our sleep. It’s all connected in a bizarre way.
It's like inserting objects into the body's event loop and hoping it produces the desired effects as it circulates, only to find that everything reacts to the event, not just the parts we want.
It's probably less "modern antidepressants are uniquely bad" and more "we got much better at starting people on safer drugs than we did at figuring out how to stop them"
For something prescribed to get someone through a temporary crisis, "how and when do we get you back off this safely?" should probably be discussed at the beginning, not years later when the patient decides to stop.
for my snri i lessened the dose by 25% and that alone cost me a week of work, i was so fucked over. when i quit this i will for sure do the thing where you open the capsules and remove a little of the contents, gradually removing more each day.
i read online about people doing this and thought they were nutjobs. well, now i know.
If a fireman is trying to stop a house fire and suddenly they catch fire themselves, no one would argue that they need to focus on the house fire first.
Antidepressants are the same: they won't stop the bigger fire by themselves, but by preventing you from catching fire right now they give you the tools to deal with the larger problem more effectively that if you tried to do it while flailing around and screaming.
This feels like a baby step towards Arm being able to emulate z/Arch workloads, maybe with a bit of secret sauce for certain specific operations, which doesn't seem very much like IBM.
Not even the weirdest thing IBM did to get compatibility between their mainframes and other CPU architectures. To build the XT/370 and AT/370 expansion cards, they custom-ordered modified 68000s that decoded System/370 instructions instead of the 68k instruction set, with most of the instructions handled by the new microcode and the few stragglers software-emulated:

since a lot of customers who lease System/z currently probably get overprovisioned hardware that they’ll never fully use, why not try a last-ditch attempt to sell the excess capacity as ARM LPARs?
IIRC, they had different licensing prices for cores that would run z/OS workloads and cores that would run Linux on s390x (and other tier for Java, I think). This looks like they’ll have one for Linux on ARM as well.
There's also the poorly advertised IBM-native S390 emulator. I worked on it over a decade ago, you could run S390 on PPC and X86 offically, and ARM and a few others were unofficial.
And Nvidia is big enough that they could impose some order on the ecosystem that the ecosystem so far has either been unable or unwilling to impose on itself. The wild west of one-offs can continue to make their application-specific designs while everyone else will presumably benefit from a reasonably standardized platform.
The book is a better measure of what allegedly existed, though it was heavily curated, and the editorial choices in it say more about William Chamberlain than they do about the putative Racter itself.
I did try feeding the book into a small LLM to generate more text but it either doesn't follow its unusually stilted prose, which is clearly templated, or it just vomits back the entire corpus which is not very large.
Man, those CompUSA and Computer City pictures take me back. Spent too much time there (when the 7300 was my regular Mac, the CompUSA "Apple store" was my primary source of software). Probably still have some of those free Computer City floppies in a drawer somewhere.
I worked the parts counter in 98-99. It was a coveted position, as the juice was the retail channel programs where qualified employees got pretty significant discounts from Intel, AMD, and the likes. Reps would also shower you with free or discounted stuff, I recall having a good friendship with a Creative Labs who rigged contests and gave away shit constantly. Lots of free software to be had as well. It was effective though because I happily and aggressively shilled for the companies hooking me up. CompUSA was actually a pretty miserable place to work but it fed MY insatiable hunger for new hardware.
There’s at least one distinction I didn’t see in the article.
If a throbber is advanced by signals of progress or at least action, then it’s not useless and is arguably better than a progress bar that moves with unpredictable and uneven speed.
If a throbber is an animated gif displayed until something makes it go away, then it’s useless.
I use NetBSD on several systems as a small server platform. I find it easier to understand and customize, and it keeps a lot of this stuff out of the landfill.
