Why carry a phone at all? Just buy one and leave it at all the places you go. Have your personal security carry a backup in case you go somewhere your assistant hasn’t been able to get a phone delivered to yet.

I don't see the point of focusing the conversation on Mexico City. You may be far enough from the fault line to have plenty of time to react, but not everyone does (as you acknowledge). You may not have tsunamis, but that doesn't change the fact that one needs to know WHAT to react to.
You are welcome to think it is ridiculous for needing 5 seconds to process what alert is going off. But the simple reality is no good disaster plan should assume that everyone will immediately understand what is happening.

There's a possibility that he lost out in internal political battles, and things weren't going his way. Google is full of battle-hardened political warriors who will do anything (subterfuge, sabotage, etc.) to win battles. It is possible that a guy who just wants to build cool shit would feel like a misfit in such an environment.
His raw skills are likely atrophied by now from delegating and operating at higher levels. His entire value is mostly political now.

I would argue its not the millions though, but rather that sweet rare compute - OpenAI has more of it for his interests than anyone - it is understandable why an exceptional mind would prioritize access to greater capabilities above all else

We also all have the right to judge people for their associations. You’re right to an action or belief doesn’t make it inherently good, or even equal to other actions and beliefs.
Getting scammed is objectively bad. If you're surrounded with people who are routinely getting scammed by Donald Trump of all people, that's bad. That doesn't mean they're bad people but... something is going on there for sure.

I disagree with this approach, and vendors that lock such changes down. If a user wants to replace every single app icon with a PNG or SVG of their choosing, that should be permissible at the OS-level. Users should always have the final say over their interface choices, and corporate or software-maker changes regarding aesthetics/interfaces should never override what the user has chosen for themselves.
Right now there's strong overlap in interfaces and experiences that make this difficult, if not impossible to execute on. Separating the two again is critical for computing to be accessible to all, as is maintaining a consistent experience throughout interface changes.

Because in most cases, it's not about the quality of the product. I've had cases where using a (free, open source) reverse proxy to implement SSO and TLS termination would save 5-digit figures (on the side closer to 6 digits) yearly from upgrading the licensing a product we used. That was rejected because then we wouldn't have anyone to point our finger at if something goes wrong with the product. It's about the "support contracts", not about the products themselves.
Which is in itself a fucking joke because now everything is outsourced to some clueless person in a call center half-way around a world, or you get to chat with an LLM. Either way, it has been ages since the "support contracts" actually resulted in a problem that wasn't ultimately solved by ourselves, not them.
