MillionShort - A long tail search engine that lets you remove up to the top 1 million most popular websites from results - https://millionshort.com

I posted Million Short 14 years ago to HN and the search engine has been largely the same since then. Now working on a pretty major overhaul: Launching our own decent sized independent index along with some (I think) cool & useful features.

The search requires a paid account currently although I plan to post a Show HN soon that won't require any account or payment.

One idea I had for getting to the tail: filter out sites that appear to use SSO.

I presume you mean SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) rather than SSO (Single Sign On). Six years ago I launched a boutique search engine which downranks pages which contain adverts on them (the theory being that this would remove the incentive for creating spam) and of course contains no adverts itself (to avoid what Brin & Page described as being "inherently biased towards the advertisers and away from the needs of consumers"). Since then some other search engines have used this approach, or even gone further such as using the uBlock origin score in ranking.

Yes, SEO, wrote the comment in rush, sorry. I am running a very popular dance calendar site in Finland that contains very relevant information, in very condensed format, but has some ads that are highly relevant for readers. I see why you might want to avoid ad based sites, but I think there may be some relevant sites that you will miss.

Seeing as how the search is already built around filtering against SEO, I actually read your comment as SSO (single sign on) - could be a good proxy/filter for "Enterprise" or B2B sites. I'll plan to add an SSO filter.

Pages with adverts are downranked (i.e. likely to appear lower in the results) rather than hidden, so if there are enough other positive signals they could still appear higher in the results.

Likely not the next Google but wanted to share: https://sanction.millionshort.com

SANCTION is an experimental search engine powered by the popular experimental search engine Million Short – an experiment within an experiment. (This is alpha and buggy!) With SANCTION you can choose to remove results from any Country you wish, for whatever reason.

Result removal is based on both the ccTLD and geographic location of where the page is hosted (a 1st degree connection). We have also provided the ability to remove results based on the ccTLD and location the scripts a particular page includes via script tags (a 2nd degree connection).

We're trying. Kindly see https://millionshort.com

Gives good results. Thanks for providing the link.

We're actively working to add lots of features on Million Short in 2018. I'd be happy to add any feature requests to our roadmap planning.

If I block ads on principle, but still want to support your site because I like the service, what are my options?

Also, adding a Dark Theme to the settings would be nice! (I'm trying to minimise the amount of light I'm exposed to at night to reduce eye-strain)

Love the concept, seems to work well. I personally use the 'media' specification of Google often (mostly: images, videos, pdfs, scholar articles, and Google patents). I didn't see a way to filter on Million Short.

...and if you could find a way to filter content that is not behind paywalls that would be amazing. As an engineer I'm constantly searching standards/specs (e.g. IEEE, ASTM, ISO standards etc.) some of which you can find free copies of for the previous revision (which are still pretty good), but you have to dig deep through top-ranking paywall sites.

Glad you like it. We'll be realeasing some interesting features in the coming days and weeks.
