I applaud Dell for offering this as an option, and for getting Ubuntu certification even on many devices which don't offer it. However, in practice it's not worth much because the standard configurations are discounted, while custom configurations with Ubuntu are not. For example, in this configuration Ubuntu is listed as $140 more than Windows. Dell probably gets money from other companies for the additional bloatware software installed on Windows system.

The same issue applies to any custom config, Windows or Ubuntu. I assume it's because a few standard specs benefit from economies of scale.

I think they should note that on the page, because it makes it look like Dell is a bad vendor but in practice they're one of the better ones, in this aspect.

That's not true for all of Dell, I just tried their online store in other countries and it is bundling Windows licenses there.

That's true, I called them and their explanation was that the hardware and software bundle is sold as a package deal.

I ended up not buying their computer.
